Jewelweed

Safety Notes

Jewelweed is used topically only in this library. It is not prepared here as an internal tea or tincture — the plant contains oxalic acid, and internal use is not well studied or established as safe. If eaten in quantity by children, it can cause mild stomach upset; keep away from small children who might sample the seed pods or plant. No significant topical safety concerns are documented for occasional use, though as with any plant poultice, discontinue if irritation develops. A closely related and visually similar species, Impatiens pallida (pale/yellow jewelweed), is used interchangeably in tradition and is not a safety concern to confuse with this one — the concern is only with unrelated toxic look-alikes in a foraging context, so positive identification still matters if harvesting wild plants.
