Psyllium

Plantago ovata Forssk.

psyllium

Safety Notes

This is the one thing to genuinely respect about psyllium: taken without enough liquid, it swells rapidly and can cause choking or esophageal blockage — documented case reports include fatal outcomes, particularly in older adults or anyone with swallowing difficulty. Always mix with a full glass of water and drink immediately; never swallow the dry powder or take capsules without a full glass of water. Avoid entirely if you have difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), esophageal narrowing, a history of intestinal obstruction, or severe constipation with abdominal pain. Psyllium can reduce the absorption of many oral medications if taken too close together — separate it from other medications by at least 2 hours, and by about 4 hours from thyroid medication (levothyroxine) specifically. It can also enhance the blood-sugar-lowering effect of diabetes medications, so monitor levels if combining the two. Those allergic to plantain (Plantago species) may also react to psyllium.
