The Fool
Upright
New beginnings, innocence, a leap of faith, spontaneity — the free spirit stepping forward without needing to know the outcome.
Reversed
Recklessness, naivety taken advantage of, foolishness without the redeeming faith.
What the Golden Dawn actually taught
Book T frames this far more starkly than Waite’s gentle “free spirit” reading — pure spiritual aspiration when the question is spiritual, but outright folly, mania, and instability when applied to ordinary material matters. Waite softened a card the Order treated as a genuine either/or judgment.
Imagery & symbolism
A young traveler steps toward a cliff’s edge, face turned skyward, unconcerned with the ground beneath him. A small dog leaps at his heels — instinct trying to warn what reason has stopped listening to. He carries everything he owns in a single bundle on a stick, weightless. The sun blazes behind him, full of promise and indifferent to outcome.
