The Hierophant
Upright
Tradition, spiritual guidance, institutions, learning through established doctrine.
Reversed
Rebellion against convention, personal belief over dogma, breaking with tradition.
What the Golden Dawn actually taught
Book T’s words are “mercy, beneficence, kindness, goodness” (ill-dignified: over-kindness, foolish generosity). The Order’s card centers on active mercy as a personal virtue rather than conformity to an institution — Waite’s keeper-of-doctrine reading shifts the emphasis from a virtue to a structural role.
Imagery & symbolism
Seated between two pillars in a posture of blessing, two acolytes kneel before him. Keys cross at his feet, and his raised hand forms the sign of benediction — the visible link between the seeker and what is beyond seeking.
