Safety Notes

The essential oil of pennyroyal is genuinely dangerous and has caused fatal liver failure even in small ingested amounts (as little as one tablespoon of the oil has been fatal) — it must never be taken internally under any circumstances, including as 'a few drops.' Even the leaf tea carries real risk in more than occasional, weak use, and pennyroyal has a documented history of being used unsafely to attempt to induce abortion, with serious harm and fatalities resulting. Absolutely avoid during pregnancy in any form. Not for children, and not recommended for anyone with liver or kidney conditions. If accidental ingestion of the essential oil is suspected, this is a medical emergency — contact Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US) or emergency services immediately.
