About This Plant

Perennial with serrated leaves covered in stinging hairs; hairs are neutralized by drying or cooking.

Origin: Europe, Asia & North America

Growing Notes: Part sun, rich moist soil, spreads by rhizome — handle fresh plant with gloves.

Traditional Uses

Traditionally used as a nutritive tonic and for seasonal wellness support (leaf). The root is a distinct traditional use of its own — traditionally, and in modern research, used specifically for prostate comfort and urinary flow in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a different application from the leaf entirely.

Preparation

Steep 1-2 tsp dried leaf, covered, 5-10 min.

Dosage: Tea: 1-2 tsp dried leaf per cup.

Safety Notes

Generally recognized as safe in culinary/traditional tea amounts. Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or nursing, before giving to children, or if taking prescription medication.
