Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst.

bacopa

Safety Notes

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, stomach cramps, and increased bowel frequency — especially when taken on an empty stomach. Bacopa may raise thyroid hormone (T4) levels and should be used cautiously or avoided by anyone with a thyroid condition or taking thyroid medication. It has a mild anticoagulant effect and may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners; stop use at least 2 weeks before any surgery. It may also worsen bradycardia, peptic ulcer disease, asthma/COPD, or urinary tract obstruction, and can interact with several liver-metabolized medications (CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP3A4 substrates). Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data, and consult a healthcare provider before giving to children.
