A dark, charcoal-like fungal growth (technically a sclerotium, not a typical mushroom cap) found on birch trees in cold climates.

Origin: Northern forests (Russia, Northern Europe, Northern North America)

Preparation

Simmer 1-2 tsp chopped dried chaga, covered, 20-30 min, or longer for a stronger decoction.

Dosage: Decoction: 1-2 tsp chopped dried chaga per cup, long simmer.

Contains oxalates, which may contribute to kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals — use caution or avoid if you have a history of kidney stones or kidney disease.
