Small woody shrub with yellow flowers and red berries; root is the medicinal part.
Origin: India & North Africa
Growing Notes: Full sun, sandy well-drained soil, drought-tolerant, frost-sensitive.
Traditionally used in Ayurvedic practice to support the body's response to stress and support restful sleep.
Simmer 1/2-1 tsp powdered root, covered, 10-15 min; often taken as a milk decoction before bed.
Dosage: Decoction: 1/2-1 tsp powdered root per cup.
Avoid or use only under professional guidance during pregnancy. Consult a healthcare provider before use while nursing, for children, or if taking prescription medication. Nightshade family — avoid if allergic to Solanaceae. May increase thyroid hormone levels — avoid if you have hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease, and use only with medical supervision if taking thyroid medication such as levothyroxine, since the combination can push hormone levels too high. May also lower blood sugar; use caution alongside diabetes medication given the added risk of it dropping too low.
