Boswellia

Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr.

boswellia

Safety Notes

Generally well tolerated, with mild gastrointestinal upset (abdominal pain, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea) as the most common side effect. Avoid during pregnancy — Indian literature reports the resin may induce abortion — and breastfeeding, where safety data is lacking. Boswellia inhibits several liver enzymes (CYP1A2, CYP2C8/9/19, CYP2D6, CYP3A4) and may increase the blood-thinning effect of warfarin (case reports show increased INR); use caution with any anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication. It may also stimulate the immune system, so avoid or use with caution if you have an autoimmune condition such as MS, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis, as it could theoretically worsen symptoms.
